Review of The Holy Mountain (1973) by Lewis "Cutewhenyouscream" C — 26 Apr 2008
Wow! That's one of the only phrases that can truly summarize Holy Mountain. Fiercely artistic, deeply disturbing and edifying, beautifully depraved...the list of oxymorons goes on and on. The film's opening proves profoundly confusing, but then it becomes a sort of Burroughsesque spiritual quest that leads to the ultimate deconstruction of not only religion but also of the film itself.
The final moments destroy any distinctions between fiction and reality and lead us to consider whether anything can truly be considered the truth.
