Review of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) by Simon T — 26 Feb 2017
Terrifically designed and photographed 2nd instalment of Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy. Yes, you could argue that it's just one thing after another, and several of the performances are a bit ooer missus, but so much is breathtakingly exciting, and Martin Freeman and Ken Stott are particularly fine at bringing out the emotional subtext.
Ian McKellen - bizarrely getting top billing - over-eggs Gandalf but disappears after the first hour, so that's all right. Good stuff.
