Great use of CGI and great action sequences. However, this film was nothing but filler. None of it seemed essential to the main plot. Even some of the fighting sequences dragged on, like they were supposed to fill the space in the filler narrative.
If you want to watch the movie for Smaug, skip to the last 30 minutes. That's it.
