Review of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) by Antony G — 11 Nov 2014
After the announcement of the release of The Hobbit I was, at first, excited but upon hearing it was to be released as a trilogy well my excitement waned a little. The Hobbit wasn't exactly a large book by comparison to its follow up, The Lord Of The Rings, so why try to make a trilogy? Money of course.
The first instalment was fine but The Desolation of Smaug has confirmed some of my fears that The Hobbit Trilogy would be like trying to spread not enough butter on an already too large piece of bread.
There's too much of nothing in this second part but thankfully it's broken up by great moments of Peter Jackson magic. The last hour is possibly worth the wait & hopefully the extended edition brings more joy.
It doesn't bring anything new to the table regarding Middle Earth but that could be said of whichever was made first. Sadly The Hobbit came after the brilliance of LOTR & it had a battle to live up to its big brother (or should that be little brother!) I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it because I did but the middle section of the movie is a little dour.
