A lot was added sure, but what they added was incredibly entertaining. I believe that Peter Jackson truly wanted to expand Middle earth in the midst of the "Hobbit" story and not just wanted to make a ton more money.
And in the midst of all the creative (extensively creative) liberties, the story of Bilbo on his adventure and the dwarves reclaiming their homeland still over arcs the general plot. And the cliff hanger left me breathless, yearning to see the concluding chapter next year.
