By now we know that the Hobbit series would've been better had it been only 1 or 2 movies, and the second instalment doesn't let you forget that. It has plenty of spectacle and action, but it also has an abundance of useless things that are thrown in for filler, but if you push those things aside, Desolation of Smaug is an improvement over the first Hobbit film, and sets up a cliffhanger for what could possibly be an epic finale.
