Review of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) by Charlie L — 23 Dec 2014
Peter Jackson, what the heck did you do to Legolas?! These are one of the most awful CGI effects on Legolas' skin and eyes I have seen in a long time, looks very unnatural, almost none facial expressions whatsoever, very disturbing indeed.
Why not use classic make-up to make the character appear younger than in the LOTR trilogy? And even if he did not look younger than in LOTR, the result would have been better than with those CGI. Also, the character itself came across very unlikeable - at least in my humble opinion.
Movie itself: again, too long. Could have shorten it by 30 or 45 minutes and it would not have harmed the plot at all. Now it seems to become even more clear, making The Hobbit a trilogy looks like a bad decision.
Just from the size and scope of the book, two two-hour or two-and-a-half-hour movies would have covered the whole story nicely and well told, "But NO! Let's make it a trilogy and let's make every part longer than two and half hour, not that it would do any of the films any good but just because we can!" Yeah right, milking the cow.
.. Best thing in this movie: Evangeline Lilly as elf Tauriel. Surprisingly, her character looked like being the most alive - and she is not even in the book. Average movie, 2.5 out of 5 stars.
