Review of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (2013) by Danny O — 17 Jun 2015
The Desolation of Smaug is such a fun movie. While the first film had some pacing issues, this movie may keep the lengthy run time, but fills it with plenty of exciting action sequences. The story is darker and the character development, especially in the hero Bilbo is much better this time around.
It's one of the most entertaining movies I've seen all year, and not once did I check to see how much time was left. The dragon Smaug at the movie's climax is so well animated and voiced that he easily becomes one of my favorite movie villains ever, and proves a formidable opponent for the dwarves.
The new additions to the cast are all interesting in their own ways, especially Legolas and Tauriel, who get to kick some serious butt. It runs a bit long at the end, but sets up the final film with a very exciting and cliffhanging finale.
Most of the dwarves are still interchangeable, but a couple get the spotlight this time. The Hobbit 2 is so much fun, even if the story feels stretched at times and we don't really care a ton about the characters.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug gets a 4/5 stars (A-).
