Review of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) by Abby D — 12 Jun 2015
I think it's a bad sign when you are glad when a movie franchise is over. But I did like this movie a lot. I loved Bilbo and his relationship with the other dwarfs, Thorin and his struggles, some of the action scenes, Tauriel and Legolas and their awesomeness, and the small bit with Smaug.
However, there are some big problems with the movie. First of all the goth looking guy the "helps" Bard is one of the most annoying, unnecessary and unfunny characters I have ever seen. Gandelf is officially the most useless wizard, always getting captured and the biggest problem is he has a staff, use some magic in those battle scenes, don't hit them on the head and give them a headache the next day.
Dumbledore would destroy those battle scenes in a second! Finally, the ending scene when Bilbo returns home was so stupid and completely weird, a moment that has you going, "why did they go with that?".
I do think these movies kind of take away from the Lord of the Rings movies, the problem is they are just so forgettable! It is extremely unnecessary to have a small book and split it into three movies that are each two and a half hours long.
The problem with them is after you see them, days later you see the glaring issues with them.
