Review of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014) by Mark F — 24 Jan 2017
There wasn't much of a plot to this, it's basically a half hour of dealing with how Smaug the Dragon dies and then the rest of the movie is a melee of dwarves, elves, people and orcs smashing into each other.
On that front there's not much realism. Orcs remind me of foot soldiers in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or those things made of putty in Power Rangers. They're completely useless at fighting and exist purely as fodder, and yet there's a never-ending supply of them. Thousands are knocked down at a time like skittles but there will soon be a thousand more coming over the hill. It gives the whole thing a sense of exhausting futility.
I still like the Middle Earth environment though. And the sense of adventure. It's not bad, it's just not great.
