Review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) by William R — 30 Dec 2014
The Hobbit - 4/5.
The Hobbit is a very welcome return to Middle Earth and Peter Jackson's return to form. He really knows this world and it's a spectacular visual feast. The first act is slow, though it has exciting, comedic moments. However when the "Journey" begins there is frequent suspense, energy between the brilliant characters and the last act is very very good.
Overall I enjoyed this alot more than Two Towers and Return to the King. It's more like Fellowship of the Ring and you can't help but compare it to the original trilogy.
It's still very long and meanders at some points but those are just minor problems. that is fixed by the tone and pacing of the film.
Finally after seeing mediocre movies i'm surprised to find a LOTRs movie to be back in my top 5 of the year.
With a light, simpler story that is fantasy at it's best I give this 4/5 and surprisingly look forward to the next film this year with great anticipation.
