Review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) by Timothy R — 02 Jan 2015
The long awaited prequel to 'The Lord Of The Rings' started off beautifully, with dialogue right off the page of Tolkien. But then the scene just dragged on...and on and I found that throughout the film.
It is a big film on a grand scale but it does not have the epic or emotional feel of the LOTR. A lot of the dialogue is clumsy and there are far too many attempts at slapstick humour. There are several fight scenes but they all blend together in a mass of fast paced visual effects instead of the gritty realism of 'The Fellowship Of The Ring'.
The film ends without any kind of emotional climax and I am now very skeptical of how this short novel will be made into 3 films. Instead of making an extended edition, perhaps Peter Jackson could make a condensed edition.
