Review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) by Mark F — 19 Dec 2015
I never quite know what's going on in Tolkien films or why it's going on. They seem to mostly be about small people going on perilous journeys for poorly defined, or inexplicable reasons.
Gandalf: We must go on a perilous journey to that far off place.
Hobbit: Isnt it dangerous?
Gandalf: Yes, but we must go there.
Hobbit: Why?
Gandalf: Because of the thing.
Hobbit: Ok.
In the LOTR I still found it all kind of engaging and liked the spectacular scenery and epic scale of things if nothing else. In this I just didn't get into it at all. It's just a bunch of hobbits walking around for a really long time.
