Review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) by Edward T — 17 Jun 2015
The Hobbit isn't quite as good as the original Rings trilogy, but it sure makes for a good time. The visual effects are the best they've ever been, fully immersing the viewers into the creative world of Middle Earth.
The epic feel of this movie is also great, and Martin Freeman was perfectly cast as Bilbo. The soundtrack is commendable and the climax is exciting. The film's biggest flaw is the pacing. Peter Jackson is known for making long films, but at least the whole time we are fully engaged in his movies.
In An Unexpected Journey, the first 30 minutes go by at a snail's pace, and there are a few other pacing issues scattered throughout the production. Most of the characters are underdeveloped and not completely replaceable, which means the movie lacks some emotional depth it needs.
Fortunately once it gets going it rarely slows down, and we're given yet another exciting adventure in Middle Earth. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey gets 4/5 stars (B+).
