The Gollum scene is a breath of fresh air amongst the otherwise drawn-out, distinctly Freeman-lacking sequences that try too hard to be both grumpy-Hobbit heartfelt and Sauron-is-coming serious. Who could ever have envisioned a film in which the truest, most genuine performance would come from an actor who was wearing ping-pong balls at the time?
