Review of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) by Rafael N — 14 Feb 2015
It's ok. It's hard not to compare this to the Lord of the Rings. In fact the structure is remarkably similar to the first LOTR movie. I think one of the things that makes LOTR better is there are more distinct characters that you care about.
Here it's pretty much just Bilbo. All the dwarves are pretty nondescript. I do like Martin Freeman here a little more than Elijah Wood's Frodo. It's interesting to see him in this after seeing him in Fargo because there is something about him you just don't completely trust.
At almost three hours, it doesn't drag too much, but there aren't that many scenes that stand out. It's not bad, just not particularly memorable.
