Review of The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017) by Charlie H — 06 Sep 2017
The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017) is an awful lot of nothing and its overwhelming assault on the senses fails to hide it as well as was intended. I'd love to know how much they paid Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L.
Jackson to star in this. Their intriguing banter at least provides scraps to invest in and chuckle at. However, the writers' inability to rise above strings of foul-mouthedess in their dialogue makes for an unimaginative spectacle that insults its audience's intelligence.
Littered with clichés and wearisome action, it's completely devoid of spontaneity or creativity. It has neither meaning, nor reason to exist. A half-hearted attempt to weave in some political realism ends up clashing uncomfortably with film's ridiculously high curse and kill count.
You may wonder how one may capture the film's many flaws in a word. Sadly, the word is generic. There's plenty this bad and more still to come. The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017) for all its mindless mayhem is unforgivably bland.
Cash-paying customers: you're better than this.
