Review of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (2005) by Rob R — 24 Mar 2012

I feel too guilty on the occassional occassion I chuckle at this. It makes me feel like a proper geek. Kelly McDonald's in it though....

Now: I thought this was only the second time I'd seen this but my original review doesn't sound like I had just seen it in the cinema (I'd have made more effort if I'd spent £8 to see it), but I definitely did see it in the cinema originally so maybe this was the third time I've seen it. I've learnt how to spell occasion now. It does look like it needs an extra s.

Anyway, I rather enjoyed this film this evening. It seems to get a lot of stick but I get the impression that's from Adams purists, because I get the impression that there are significant differences between the book and the film. I'm fairly sure I've never finished the book, y'see. We had it as our set text one time at WGS and I'm still pretty sure I didn't read it all. I read all of Silas Marner, Of Mice and Men and Macbeth but not this one. Or Catcher In The Rye, I don't think I finished that one either (which is odd because it's probably right up my street). And I've probably tried to read it again since, but no, I have no idea how it ends. Maybe I should get the Kindle version of it because reading anything on (Isobel's) Kindle makes it seem more interesting. As for the first hour or so of the film, I remember that from the book so I reckon it must be the ending that's off.

Now, more importantly, Zooey Deschanel. I have watched every episode of New Girl. I download it illegally so I'm ahead of Channel 4. I think it's rubbish, but I still watch it. I think Zooey Deschanel is superrrr annoying, but I still watch it. She's just fit, end of. If she made a cameo in Miranda, I'd even watch that. But she looks very plain in this, almost make up free. And that's even hotter. Good god. The shower scene, out of context, I don't think I'd recognise her.

So I did enjoy this, Marvin was annoying but his appearances were sporadic and I think would have suffered more if it wasn't Alan Rickman voicing them. Personally, I thought the biggest crime was cutting off Neil Hannon's version of the opening titles during the closing titles. Hopefully the soundtrack's on Spotify so I can hear it in full. Soundtrack was pretty good, though it could have had more bombast - and I know Talbot can do bombast.
