I tried to watch this movie back when it first came out, but having not read the book and knowing next to nothing about the concept, I didn't get very far into it before I found it to be bland and not very funny, and decidedly subpar on every single level.

Then I read the book, and quite enjoyed it, and tried to watch this movie again, but didn't get very far into it before I realized that my first impression was spot on and that it is in fact rather bland and not very funny at all and most definitely decidedly subpar on every single level.
