Review of The Hitcher (1986) by Scott U — 14 Aug 2007
To start off, I am not so much entertained by this film, as I am mesmerized by its pungent depiction of desert highways, gas stations, roadside diners, and one psychopathic, and sadistic hitch-hiker played by Rutger Hauer.
As highly as I regard Rutger Hauer, and his characters, I cannot get past what happens to poor Jennifer Jason Leigh in this film. In fact she often gets the short end of the stick. Nonetheless, this is a very intense, and atmospheric stalker Suspense film with strong elements of horror.
It is especially interesting comparing Dutch Rutger Hauer's more lethargic villainous hitcher, with English Sean Bean's more intermittently explosive villainous hitcher.
That said, neither actor goes over the top, as they both exude a quiet menace, and manage to earn the audience's hatred and disgust.
1980's and Horror is a combination that will always guarantee a reasonably high standard of excellence and entertainment.
