Review of The History Boys (2006) by Steven L — 28 Mar 2008
I really appreciate the National Theatre keeping the cast from this stage production completely intact for the film. The ensemble was exceptinal and their relationships incredibly well-defined and performances beautifully connected -- as can only happen through a real rehearsal process and extended run.
Great writing. Perhaps in the translation from one medium to another it could have benefited from a little less writing. Alan Bennett's script just seems a little over-written for film. It's that David Hare, Tom Stoppard style of British verbosity that rings a little false in a realistic film.
