Review of The History Boys (2006) by Ali J — 19 Jun 2008
Enjoyable romp through the lives of clever but every day chaps at a boy's grammar school in the 80s and their attempts to get into Oxbridge. Usual Alan Bennett fodder - sharp and witty script - full of pathos and as camp as a cub scout jamboree.
Enjoyable and well acted, but having originally been for the stage, there lacked a much needed film-like space and quality. It still felt as though it was confined to a theatre setting. Good sideburn rating: 0/10 - Set in the mid 1980s and cast mainly school boys = zilch.
Presence of sartorial elegant men: 2/10 a couple of marks for the strangely attractive Stephen Campbell Moore who always wears clothes well, but again 1980s + school uniforms do not score high marks.
