Review of The Hills Run Red (2009) by Andy N — 18 Jan 2010
I really liked it. A new take on the slasher genre with, surprisingly, a good slasher. Is Baby Face in the same league as Michael Myers or Jason Vorhees? No, but he's damned close. His character has some mystery about him, he's pretty grotesque looking, and he kills people in some pretty awesome ways. The Hills Run Red kept my attention from start to finish. It's pretty short, runs just over an hour. The film does what it sets out to do which is essentially tell you a short scary story that wraps itself up by the end in a huge blood bath.
The direction is standard fare, its the same type of film quality and direction you find in a lot of independent horror films these days. With this and Trick r Treat under its belt Warner Premier is proving a pretty a good place to go for some independent horror flicks.
The acting is pretty good for a film of this nature as well. No Academy awards to hand out to anyone in particular, but everyone kept me interested in their character. Whereas most slasher films don't really give their meat puppets characters and just give them stereotypes to play out, H.R.R. actually places characters down in front of the camera and sees how they play out against Baby Face and it works. They all have their little motivations and what not and you can actually get a feel for who they are so that when they react its actually fun to watch because they do what their character would do instead of what the stereotype would do. And if I haven't stressed it enough, Baby Face is cool. He's actually smart about the way he goes about his business-I'd digress but that would be a bit of a spoiler.
If you're looking for a quick fix of gore or you're looking for a new slasher instead of a bunch of remade slashers-then check out The Hills Run Red. It runs just over an hour so it won't be too time consuming and its entertaining from start to finish. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel or anything, but it knows what it is and injects a bit of new life into it.
