Review of The Hills Run Red (2009) by Patrick E — 20 Jun 2010
The Hills Run Red is a decent slasher film that never takes itself too seriously and almost acts as a parody to previous slasher films. The plot is nothing new but it has all the ingredients that make an entertaining slasher and coupled with excellent production values and good effects this is definitely an above average straight to DVD offering.
The plot revolves around an infamous horror film called The Hills Run Red that was made in the 80's but banned because of its brutality. Tyler is a film student who is obsessed with the film and sets out to try and find the only remaining print of the film. He enlists the help of his girlfriend and best mate and track down the daughter of the director who leads them to the place the film was shot. Sadly for them it turns out that the killer from the film is not as fictitious as they think.
What makes The Hills Run Red stand out from the myriad of other straight to DVD slashers is the parody that exists throughout. Characters constantly reference the rules of horror films such as mobile phones not working and it's all done in a lighthearted manner. The plot is somewhat different and the acting is decent for the most part. It moves along at a swift pace and the occasional flash back scene does provide some genuine horror. Sadly it's all let down by a poor ending though that shamelessly sets itself up for a sequel.
The Hills Run Red has all the typical slasher clichés but itâ??s the better for it and is an enjoyable film to watch on a Friday night.
