Review of The Hills Have Eyes (2006) by Dan G — 09 Jan 2010
A rare piece of modern American horror, this film really and truly glorifies in its gore content and actually succeeds at being moderately unsettling, even to this jaded, desensitized gorehound. While much of the early film is a shot for shot remake of the '77 original, this isn't as bad as it is for most other cases where this happens as it lets the full intensity of the original's intent really shine through this version's modern equipment and higher budget.
A little more than halfway in, this remake finally blazes its own new trail with the brilliantly designed dilapidated nuclear test village sets and some inspired gore and makeup effects that the original version simply didn't consider or couldn't afford.
Due to the shortage of truly satisfying gore in the modern American horror film scene, I probably respect this film a bit more than I should for actually going for it and making no apologies.
