Review of The Hills Have Eyes 2 (2007) by Jason ? — 22 May 2009
I just got back from watching 'The Hills Have Eyes 2." I didn't expect it to be any good, but it was truly horrible, and I can't believe not only did I waste my money on it, but I was actually really looking forward to it.
It is the epitome of everything that is wrong with the horror genre these days. Awful dialogue, cardboard characters that you couldn't give two damns about, and cheap scares such as the 'jump out of nowhere' or 'put my hand on your shoulder and scare the audience real quick but nope i'm actually one of the good guys (I swear does EVERY horror movie have to do this!?).
Not to mention it was boring. I checked my watch over and over again, as did I see others doing. There was absolutely no usage of suspense or tension, and the bad guys weren't even menacing or scary (they showed them in good light way too much). They just looked like really big guys that people put some make-up on.
*sigh*.
The trailer for the movie boasted that it was more shocking than the first one. This was definitely not the case. It wasn't more shocking, it was much more predictable. The thing that the first one had going for it and that made me like it was you didn't know what was going to happen next... it was pretty original (despite being a remake). And yet the sequel was just one of those typical insert new names into the stock horror script.
Bad editing. Bad directing.
I can not think of one thing that can salvage this movie.
