Review of The Hills Have Eyes (1977) by Cal ( — 31 Oct 2007
Original Wes Craven horror film has dated pretty severely, but still supplies a few good quality chills. Loosely based on a Scottish legend, Craven brings this legend into modern days where we follow the Carter family.
The Carter family are your usual patriotic American family on a trip to California. Their car and caravan breaks down in the middle of the desert, near a nuclear testing site. With the family stranded in the middle of no-where, they start working to establish contact with someone to come and rescue them.
On the first day, the family start being stalked by a group of psychotic cannibals who begin killing off members of the family. In an effort to stay alive, they make a stand and attempt to fight back.
Those who are big fans of Craven's studio work produced later in his career may be put off by this ultra low-budget horror feature. It may have been considered really good back when it was released, but the effect has really sort of worn off and seems moderately tame compared to today's film.
Still, it's not a bad film, but it's not a great film either.
