Review of The Help (2011) by Hannah L — 14 Sep 2012
I had no idea what the movie was about when I sat down in the theaters for this film. Then it started and I quietly said to myself, "Oh, god. Not another white savior film!" But it wasn't terrible to get through.
I found myself to be pretty emotional during certain parts. I just wished that a movie that seemingly wanted to destroy the central conflict, didn't have to perpetuate the problematic pieces that contribute to that very conflict.
Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer's performances were splendid. They were what made this movie work despite being forced to be supporting actresses and play such awful type casted, cookie cutter roles.
