Review of The Help (2011) by Milena G — 26 Sep 2012
The Help: It's one of fall's wonderful surprises, filled with the right kind of heart, intentions and emotions. This film surely does enough justice to the book, although the book is way more detailed and richer than what is shown on display (what film-based-book-adaption hasn't). Its also filled with a lively cast and their 3-Dimensional characters, the strongest performance throughout the whole is Viola Davis as Abilene (a maid, more like a nanny considering the 17 white babies she had to take care of). Octavia Spencer also provided a funny comical Minny who somehow manages us to laugh about the whole thing, particularly one scene dealing with a pie. Emma Stone is the most talented person out there and if all she do is widen her big eyes and take down notes, hey! she portrayed Skeeter like no other. Bryce Dallas Howard as the evil-spirited, toilet-crazy Hilly Holbrooke who you'll hate so much and the lady of mess, portrayed so brilliantly by Jessica Chastain.
It maybe the most quietly-powerful and strong female-empowerment movie ever released this year so don't miss this one.
Falters: the one thing the movie suffers is the scene-after-scene look in which you can't stick to one emotion for long because the next scene is just going to cut into a whole different feel/vibe. Another minor problem is the unnecessary characters put into this such as Skeeter's boyfriend.
It deserves a 78%.
