Review of The Help (2011) by Les E — 05 Mar 2013
The film I saw is named The Help. It is an emotional movie about the civil rights act and it shows how people were treated during that time. This movie makes you feel that you are in that time and you experience the feelings that both whites and blacks had. Although The Help is a wonderful movie it involves racism that I wouldn't recommend younger people to hear and see. Not only is the movie about people who lived in the civil rights time, it's about a white woman wanting to write a book about the blacks perspective on how they're treated, the women they work for, etc. She gets a few servants to help her with her book abut without revealing their identities.
This movie was nominated for the awards Best Picture, Best Actress for Viola Davis, Best Supporting Actress for Jessica Chastain, and won the an award for Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer. On January 29, 2012, the film won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. These awards were rightfully earned but I think they should have won the Oscar for Best Picture.
It was a truly inspiring movie. The film isn't just purely meant to entertain. It has a theme to it. I think the theme is to love and to be kind to others. Don't judge people by the color of their skin or just something they believe in. I also think the theme is to fight for what you believe in. In the movie the book really expresses that. The things the that are said by the women who helped write the book does express the emotion that is a simple as using the same bathroom. They fought for the right to do so and though they didn't get it right away, they didn't give up and soon enough they would.
Aside from the messages this movie sent and how great the acting was, the way it was shot made it better along with the music. The way it was angled you could easily see the emotion on their faces. It could make them look weak, helpless, afraid, sad, happy, or it made them look like they are filled with pure anger. The music did just as well. It could make a happy moment happier or a sad moment even more sad. All different aspects of this film were just plain genius.
I would recommend this to just about anyone. It's personally one of my favorite movies. I honestly wish that the film would continue on. Anyone who has a chance to get their hands on it I say they grab it and watch it.
