Review of The Help (2011) by Alex M — 02 Jul 2014
This film was quite the sensation when it came out, and deservedly so. It's a feel-good movie that isn't afraid to also tackle serious issues like racism. All of the cast is stellar. Viola Davis brilliantly anchors this movie with her central performance as Aibileen.
I sensed Octavia Spencer's performance as Minny could win her an Oscar, and I was right, it did. Emma Stone also proves she can handle drama as well as comedy, and Bryce Dallas Howard successfully comes across at playing one of the most despicable racist characters I've ever seen.
Jessica Chastain also shines as a woman who at first, seems like another stereotypically dumb blond, but is a lot smarter and kinder than you would think. It's a film that will truly make you both laugh and cry.
