Review of The Hedgehog (2009) by Mark D — 27 Mar 2011
I know generally we prefer books to the film adaptations of them, but this was an exception to the rule. The film is also actually pretty terrible, lacking in plot and substance, missing most of what the book tries to portray.
However, this is a plus for me, as the book is a pretentious, self-obsessed account of the protagonists' belief that unless you read Tolstoy and listen to Purcell, then you're one of the uneducated riff-raff.
What the film does is leave half of the book out, cutting endless descriptions of Japanese films and pointing out our failings in literature and music.
And that can only be a good thing.
What the film actually does is prove that the book has no plot either but makes it a one and half hour chore, rather than a five hour bore (the reading of the book)!
