Review of The Heartbreak Kid (2007) by Isabella O — 25 Jan 2010
A wildly hilarious opening hour is ruined by the idea that Ben Stiller should chase Michelle Monghan to get her back into his arms, which fails then turns itself around into a blissful reunion. However, despite the film being mediocre cinema, it really is funny, with a decent turn from Stiller and also Akerman as the sex-crazed, flip-switching new wife.
Critics hated it and I can understand why in places, there are several scenes which lack balance. But the genre is comedy, and it is full of decent comic timing, hilarious one-liners and amusing slapstick moments.
It maybe stupid, but you'll leave feeling pleased, particullarly if you are a fan of the Farrelly brothers or Ben Stiller's other romantic works.
