Review of The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things (2004) by Rosilyne B — 18 Aug 2008
A truly dark, depressing, dirty, disgusting movie - not at all for the weak at heart. Yet it is not to be missed for anyone that can handle it. You'll be seeing lots of dirty sex, drug use, and most of all, child abuse.
The strongest thing the film has to offer is in the boy who plays 7 year old Jeremiah. He is so intense, and you watch his life basically be destroyed, yet he is admirable and and tough through it all.
It's a highly entertaining ride to go a long with an interesting book, story, and concept. The Heart is Deceitful is the only truly good film Asia Argento has put together thus far, which excites me very much, as I've always admired her and her father (Dario Argento - one of my favorite horror directors (watch SUSPIRIA please)).
Asia Argento does a wonderful job playing the most vile, crusty junkie-slut mom you've seen. The film is also full of plenty of cameos to get your motor running. Except to see short sequences with Winona Ryder, Marilyn Manson, Michael Pitt, those twins from that show on Disney/Big Daddy, and many more.
I'd say if you have a bit of darkness in your head/heart, you need to see this movie. It stands out from the rest of the pack, that's for sure.
