Review of The Haunting of Molly Hartley (2008) by Kristin R — 20 Apr 2012
The movie starts with an odd scene. "O hai is time for lovies follow de string hee hee". Then, the girl is stabbed in the chest by her drunk father. I have no idea what that is supposed to do with the rest of the movie or just how much vodka was consumed before the decision was made to include it, but all it did was confuse me.
I spent the first 5 minutes of the actual movie figuring out if the first lady was the girl's mother or something. If that beginning were deleted, the bulk of the movie is actually not bad. Molly is damned thanks to Mom and Dad birthing in a publish restroom and being approached by an evil lady who so happens to later become Molly's guidance counselor.
My favorite part was when the bitchy ex-girlfriend of the most popular boy (who was flirting with Molly) picks a fight during which Molly breaks her arm. That was so incredibly awesome that it makes this movie worth watching.
So, the climax of the movie has to do with Molly's 18th birthday, during which soulless demons or something come after her. They never actually say WHAT will come to get her soul or her or what exactly they plan to do with it once they get it.
There should have been something more explicit about all of that. The birthday scene was bizarre and didn't clear up a single thing. There was the school counselor, the boyfriend and some shadowy people.
Molly stabs herself instead of killing her father. The End? Ho no. Then, Molly is all happy and smiles graduating and her father has been committed to a psych ward. WHAT THE HELL? The ending comes out of nowhere.
What happened to the shadow people? Why is the boyfriend with her? Is she evil? How is she still alive? This movie would have benefited from better writing and scenes that actually went together.
