Review of The Haunting in Connecticut (2009) by Chris A — 19 Aug 2010
The top critics, have no idea what they're talking about when it comes to horror movies, expecting the same terrible special affects and camp acting as they recieved back when they were children!
This film, is not as terrible as the critics are making out.
It's not stupid, and it is very scary in places.
Now, the plot won't be winning any awards, a mish-mash of all sorts of other horror movies, and rather than relying on atmosphere and sound, it relies on jump cuts and loud noises. It's not clever, and it doesn't require you to even care about the plot to enjoy it.
The main cast do a good job with the script they've been given, Virginia Madsen fulfilling her role as the grief-stricken mother exceptionally well, the actors playing the children however are a completely different story, tiresome, unoriginal and sadly, boring. If it wasn't for the adult cast and jump cuts this would be unwatchable.
In the end, I disagree with the opinion of the critics, but..... they are right when they complain, it's not perfect in any way. It's Amityville light, and only worth watching for the scariest moment in cinema (makes you scream) the rest is just tacky nonsense, that makes no sense and would have benefitted from a longer time being written, and a more charismatic cast.
4/10.
