Review of The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia (2013) by Richard C — 04 Feb 2013
The original Haunting in Connecticut was mediocre at best so the idea of a sequel wasn't very enticing to me. And after seeing the trailer I was even less thrilled even though gorgeous man crush Chad Michael Murray was in it.
Well in all fairness it was a touch better than than I thought. Having really nothing to do with the original except a story angle concerning taxidermy which makes the title oh so confusing. The film centers on the true story of a family who moves to a small home in the middle of Georgia and begins to discover it has a rich history of being a beacon for runaway slaves on the underground railroad.
Even before arriving the young lady of the house is seeing ghosts and upon arriving her daughter begins to have visions. It all culminates in a whole bunch of hooey mumbo jumbo that I hated for about 8/10s of the running time.
I mean it was so boring it was like watching paint dry. The film to the somewhat overlong finale is filled with quick cuts and flashes, annoying modern genre garbage. It's always kinda confusing and not very interesting with decent performances and amateur direction.
Than in that finale it opens up. Explains the story and unleashes some gore and light supernatural carnage akin to the original Amityville Horror and it's surprisingly interesting and even a little scary and inspired I dare say.
But don't worry after that 15 mins. it recedes into garbage again with a happy lifetime movie climax. Sadly Murray isn't given much to do except wear a tight fitting tank top and try and talk in a southern accent.
All of this would have been more effective had he had no shirt on. Just Saying. All in all it's pretty crappy but does have some moments and is about on par with most of the crud released last year if not slightly above it.
Buried inside this film is the tracings of something truly unique too bad it's overcome with a essence of trying to cash in on silly genre trappings which include but are not limited too the confusing title.
2/5.
