Review of The Haunting (1999) by Guido S — 17 Oct 2013
I'm pretty sure I saw this in theaters when it came out and maybe caught it on cable a few years later. However, that did not occur to me until I was a few minutes into this film if that tells you how memorable it is. Lili Taylor is chosen for a study after losing her son through custody, which never really matters to the story. Liam Neeson is a doctor studying the science of fear and decides to lock up some insomniacs in a mansion with a rich history and feed them some horror stories and let them go from there. Beyond that, the study never really matters much to the story either.
Other participants include Zeta-Jones and Wilson who basically play the parts of stuck up girl and comedic relief respectively. Eventually, everyone finds out the house is truly haunted and the ghost of the guy who built it and wanted children, but actually stole them and they died in his mansion.
The cgi is ok, sometimes a little hard to make out what your supposed to see. This did come in the early days of CGI, so I can forgive it for that. Otherwise, it's pretty bland and forgettable. Nothing really stands out, despite the huge budget for the film. It sounds fantastic though with a good 5.1 setup.
