Robert Wise's Haunted House opus is probably the best scary movie I've ever seen. No director has done so much with so little- the shadow of a wallpaper texture, a creaking door, muted muttering.
Is the house actually haunted, or is delicate Eleanor coming unhinged? An understated masterclass in the study of fear.
