Review of The Haunting (1963) by George W — 03 Jul 2011
The screenplay has issues (mostly the frequently goofy dialogue and the voice-over thoughts, which sometimes work and sometimes don't), it takes awhile to get going properly after its very effective prologue, and at least the men in the cast never quite manage to make us believe they're real people.
Still, this remains one of the best haunted house movies for its thick, unshakable atmosphere (few movies are this eerie), courtesy of Wise's technical direction--the sleek black & white widescreen cinematography, the elegant production design, the taut, occasionally percussive editing, and a fantastic score.
Plus, it belongs on any list of great jump-out-of-your-seat moments in horror history.
