Review of The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (2009) by Carl N — 25 Sep 2009

The Haunted World of El Superbeasto is Rob Zombie's attempt at delivering a mixture of comedy, sex, and horror presented through animation. The end result is something spectacular that's receiving more negativity than it really should be receiving.

The story concerns super celebrity luchador wrestler/movie star/etc El Superbeasto (voiced by Tom Papa), a cocky, arrogant, chauvinistic pig and anti-hero who works hard making his porno films and spending all of his money at the local titty bar, where he is entranced by new dancer Velvet Von Black (Rosario Dawson), a real thing of beauty but an extreme annoyance (the wigger accent and attitude is enough to make anyone cringe).

When Von Black is kidnapped by the evil Dr. Satan (Paul Giamatti, whose terrific), El Superbeasto and his sister Suzi-X (Sherri Moon Zombie) and her robot companion (Brian Posehn) come to the rescue. The film overflows with vulgar language, sex and fart jokes, mass amounts of nudity (seriously.

..lots!), and a very large bucket of gore, to which I embraced with wide open arms. The film is a cross between the old Heavy Metal movie and the Ren & Stimpy Show (a lot of the same oddball humor is applied here) in terms of animation and content.

The film also sports a HUGE array of vocal talents from many people Zombie has worked with in the past. The film also contains enough amusing references to other movies (general horror and Zombie's own films) and humorously tongue-in-cheek background music.

This is a cartoon strictly for adults, as well as for those who "get" what Zombie is trying to accomplish with this film. Those who don't "get" it will surely not enjoy this movie.
