Review of The Haunted World of El Superbeasto (2009) by Brice M — 25 Sep 2009
Right off the bat I want to note I'm indifferent toward Rob Zombie's output as a director. I enjoyed The Devil's Rejects, House of 1,000 Corpses was interesting but we'd all seen it before and the Halloween "re-imagining" was just punishment to the cornea.
So I approached El Superbeasto with low expectations - I'm not a huge fan of animation either - and was slightly impressed with the cartoon. It's definitely not "horror" but there were enough laughs to keep me interested.
Zombie injects some self-referential jokes for fanboys (loved Michael Myers getting hit by the car) and puts in your classic monsters ranging from Dr. Phibes to the Metaluna Mutant to get some mileage out of the genre.
It's not a great example of filmmaking by any stretch of the imagination but it is a step up from some of Zombie's other work.
