Review of The Hateful Eight (2015) by Harrison W — 17 Apr 2016
The Hateful Eight delivers a powerful narrative as a visual stage play. 95% of the film takes place in a single room or inside a stagecoach, with the story being driven by the conversations of the characters.
Towards the end there will also be some of Tarantino's signature ultra violence and fountains of blood, but most of the focus is on building and understanding the characters through mini stories and anecdotes they tell each other.
Considering that facts very little actually happens and that movie is extremely long (187 minutes), it is amazing that it is still enjoyable which clearly illustrates Tarantino's mastery of storytelling through conversation.
No director, past or present, can match him here. The drawback is that although visually impressive, he is severely underutilizing the medium. It has been hinted that it is sequel to Django. I disagree.
Its a sequel, or almost a remake of Inglorious Basterds. That movie also featured very lengthy conversational trickery folowed by a blood bath. The setup here is almost the same. If it is ever adapted to stage, which should be easy, it should be a success, as its format would be a much better fit.
