Review of The Hateful Eight (2015) by Richard D — 27 Aug 2016
When I saw this in the theater, I liked it, but didn't love it. A second viewing has not changed my mind. A lot of negative reviews focused on the pointlessness of setting up an intricate character-driven mystery just to end it in a burst of over-the-top comic gore.
That's not exactly my complaint. The gore doesn't bother me, and does kind of feel like what the film is building too. I think the film deflates it's momentum by shifting to a flashback digression at exactly the wrong point.
The flashback does a lot of explaining, but feels like it's telling you a lot of pointless detail just when it should be charging forward. By the time it gets back to it's gory climax, the damage has been done.
