Review of The Hateful Eight (2015) by Mandy S — 26 May 2016
Probably Tarantino's best film : an almost theatrical work which is reminiscent of the David Mamet of "Glengarry Glen Ross". With a very well-assorted ensemble of lowlives, the Tennessee director keeps the story tense just with sharp dialogue throughout the first half of the picture.
Subtle when it comes to talk about racial and political tensions of the time, and overwhelming in the magnificent beauty of its snowy locations, it's his most powerful film to date. Jennifer Jason Leigh delivers an incredible, Oscar-deserving performance as Daisy Domergue, and so does Walton Goggins as the supposed-to-be new sheriff of Red Rock.
Ennio Morricone's soundtrack is his best work in years, and the picture is gloriously filmed in Ultra-Panavision 70 mm.
