Review of The Hateful Eight (2015) by Ayrton C — 15 Dec 2017
I am a huge fan of Tarantino because he is an uncompromisingly stylish and indelicate director. BUT, I don't understand what he wants to say with this film. The premise of the unfolding mystery that takes place in a remote cabin is interesting, although for a Tarantino western I was hoping for more diverse set pieces, but it really just ends up feeling like a whole movie about Jennifer Jason Leigh being beaten up by a bunch of dudes and everyone saying the N word a lot. There is no breadth or scale like we see in Kill Bill, probably Tarantino's best film(s), and no one who we really like enough to want to survive (which incidentally no one does).
Pluses - a new score by the legendary Ennio Morricone and the resurrection of an obsolete, extrawide film format are appreciated nods to the more nerdy film lovers out there.
