Review of The Hateful Eight (2015) by Will H — 29 Mar 2016
Tarentino directs his 8th film, the Hateful Eight. The film starts off with a bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) ready to bring in his prisoner Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh). On the way he encounters another bounty hunter (Samuel L.
Jackson), a Sheriff (Walton Goggins) and they all get trapped in a small inn due to a blizzard. As they rest and gather themselves they begin to wonder if the others at the inn (Roth, Madsen and Dern) may be conspiring to free Daisey.
In a who done it like fashion the tensions rise as a blood bath looms. The Hateful Eight is way too long and starts off way too slow. As with other Tarentino films, the characters are enjoyable enough to warrant this, and the pay off is all worth it.
Hateful Eight mostly falls short of this. The film certainly improves, but it easily one of his weakest and less original efforts. The beginning overture play by Morricone was fantastic which earned him an Oscar.
Leigh was a gruesome sight and was nominated as well. Had Tarentino carved out an hour the film would be much better, but he went for too much this time.
