Review of The Hateful Eight (2015) by Shane S — 12 Jun 2016
A return to Tarainto's earlier works. The Hateful Eight delivers this legendary director's signature style in another solid entry to his resume. The script is of the same top shelf quality one usually expects from a Tarantino original, but an over-bloated length might leave many adrift. I am all one for indulgent movies when there is a purpose. Hateful Eight drags in spots and lacks the tension and build up to carry a nearly three hour run time. It is worth watching for excellent performances, especially from Jennifer Jason Leigh and Samuel L Jackson. As usual, Tarantino crafts a role that his favorite son actor completely nails.
The movie also suffers from a few tonal shift problems. The needless violence against the film's sole female lead feels oddly out of place. The mid-movie shift, another Tarantino staple, is also more jarring than usual and nearly the divides the film into two separate, only loosely connected ideas. For all its flaws, The Hateful Eight was still a worthy and unique film.
