Review of The Hateful Eight (2015) by Ohsnappage . — 12 Jun 2016
The Hateful Eight is the 8th film by Quentin Tarantino, and it stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Bruce Dern in another western film about 8 complete strangers that take shelter in a place from a blizzard, and while people are getting to know each other, one of them is not quite who they say he is.
I was excited to see this as I really like Tarantino's work, and I was curious to see what he's going to put in for another western as his previous film was a western film. I'm glad to say that The Hateful Eight is completely different from Django Unchained, and is just as fantastic as that too.
The cast that is has is fantastic, whether it be Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Tim Roth, Walton Goggins, and Jennifer Jason Leigh who which I'm glad that she got nominated for an Oscar for her raw performance.
The one aspect that I was curious about, was the score by Ennio Morricone as he got the Academy Award for Best Original Score, and I can definitely see why as it was different than what I usually hear in film scores, and not only is it really good, but it's also cool that the movie has some songs in here that were about to be in John Carpenter's The Thing, but weren't, and now they're in this, which actually fits to this surprisingly.
The movie has snappy dialogue, and the characters are very well known. I was a bit worried that I wasn't going to like Walton Goggins's character because he was a bit annoying in this movie, but when it got to the middle and end, he was starting to win me over.
The mystery part of it is great which I have no idea who was the culprit here, and it was making me wonder if that was suppose to be a metaphor for Quentin Tarantino's first script to this being leaked to everything.
The effects look really good, it's really funny, and the ending is a lot of fun to watch. Consider that it's 168 minutes, I honestly do think that there are some scenes that can be cut out so that more people would find it more interesting, but the problems with that however, is that it was trying to develop character here, and consider the fact that the movie is trying to build 8 main characters up, even add in some supporting characters for that matter, is a difficult task, and Quentin Tarantino succeed on it.
With that said, The Hateful Eight is a terrific movie that Tarantino is one of the rare directors that can do a western right in these days.
