Review of The Hate U Give (2018) by Ernest J — 04 Nov 2018
"The Hate U Give" is one of 2018's most memorable, intense, and thought-provoking films. From the moment this film began, I was invested in the story and the characters. The film is very well acted and Amandla Stenberg does an outstanding job in the lead role.
The story explores countless themes about modern-day racism, social issues, activism, and more. Usually, films that focus on young people can come off as cheesy or over the top but this one tended to be more on the realistic side.
The story isn't designed to be easy to watch, but it is important for everyone to experience it. It is exceptionally relevant to many problems today. I was emotionally invested and felt on the edge of my seat for a majority of this movie because it constantly felt like anything could happen next.
If I were to nitpick, I would say the film might be just a little bit too long, but honestly, it's not enough for me to lower my rating of the film. Overall, this film is an unforgettable one that will stay with me for a very long time and I think it might be one of the most masterfully handled films of the young adult genre.
